The Better Way to Replace Missing Teeth

Are you suffering from missing teeth? Do your dentures or other prosthetics pinch, slip out of place, or change the way you sound when you speak? Are you having difficulty eating what you like? Do you feel that tooth loss is aging you? Then dental implants from Mooring Dental may be just the solution you have been wishing for.

How Missing Teeth Can Affect Your Wellbeing

People lose their teeth for countless reasons including:

  • Gum disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Cancer
  • Dementia
  • Hormone fluctuations
  • Extreme decay
  • Trauma to the face or jaw

For whatever reason you have lost a tooth or teeth, that loss affects much more than how you look.

Even if you are missing just one tooth, bone loss begins, remaining teeth shift out of place, and even more teeth are put in jeopardy of failure. Bone loss is especially concerning in patients who have lost most or all of their teeth.

But it isn’t only your oral health that suffers, your overall health is in danger as well. A study published in the International Journal of Dentistry states that missing teeth can:

  • Lower intake of fruits and vegetables, fiber, and carotene and increase cholesterol and saturated fats. In addition to a higher prevalence of obesity, it can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and gastrointestinal disorders
  • Increase rates of chronic inflammatory changes of the gastric mucosa, upper gastrointestinal and pancreatic cancer, and higher rates of peptic or duodenal ulcers
  • Increase the risk of non insulin-dependent diabetes melitus
  • Increase the risk of electrocardiographic abnormalities, hypertension, heart failure, ischemic heart disease, stroke, and aortic valve sclerosis… A study also demonstrated a possible association between complete edentulism and an increased risk of coronary heart disease.
  • Decrease daily function, physical activity, and physical domains of health-related quality of life
  • Increase the risk of chronic kidney disease
  • Be linked to sleep-disordered breathing, including obstructive sleep apnea

Appearance is also an important aspect of wellbeing. If you are embarrassed by or uncomfortable with your appearance, it definitely affects your confidence and your social life. There is an obvious social stigma attached to tooth loss and edentulousness and this can have a tremendous psychological and emotional impact. We have found that, before dental implants, some of our edentulous patients had started to feel isolated and insecure. Their performance at work was affected, they avoided initiating new relationships, their existing relationships faltered, and they suffered from deepening depression. Dental implants turned all of that around!

Why not let Mooring Dental help you? Our variety of tooth-replacing dental implant systems can help you eat what you want, speak clearly, and smile as if you never lost a single tooth!

What is involved in Placement and Restoration

The dental implant tooth-replacement system consists of titanium posts surgically placed through gum tissue into your jawbone and prosthetic teeth to replace the visible chewing surfaces that have been lost. The titanium posts are what sets dental implants apart from removable prosthetics; the posts not only hold your teeth, they replace your lost tooth roots, keeping the underlying bone stimulated. This stops bone resorption, the process of bone loss that happens with every missing tooth. What’s more, keeping your bone stimulated helps stop the facial collapse that gives denture wearers such an aged appearance. Once the posts have healed and been integrated into your bone, we will replace the visible parts of your missing teeth. This could include individual implants, a bridge held in place by one or more implants, or a full or partial implant-retained denture.

Whether you are a candidate for traditional or mini-implant placement, permanent dental implants can really improve your life. Dental implants act just like natural teeth – they never have to be removed for sleeping or cleaning, they feel comfortable all the time and they let you eat and laugh as if you had never lost a tooth at all!

Mini-Implants

Have you worn dentures for years and are worried you may not have enough bone to qualify for an implant? Are you nervous about the pain and expense of traditional dental implants? Dread the idea of wearing temporary teeth while your implant posts heal into place? Talk to us about the possibilities offered by mini dental implants.

Mini-implants are a terrific option for patients who have been told they may not have enough bone to support a traditional implant or for those who want fast and comfortable results. These implants are ultra-small and placed with incredible precision utilizing our cone beam technology. Because there are no incisions and no sutures, the recovery time is much shorter, plus you won’t have to return to our office to have your stitches removed. Best of all, we can usually place your crowns or implant-supported dentures the very same day your post or posts are placed!

Implant-Retained Dentures

If you are missing all of your upper or lower teeth, implant-retained dentures may change your life! Instead of dentures that:

  • Rest on your gums
  • Cover the roof of your mouth
  • Obscure the taste of food, making eating less pleasurable
  • Require sticky adhesives to hold them in place
  • Must be soaked at night
  • Are removed for cleaning
  • Quickly need to be adjusted for continued fit…

…implant-retained dentures fit and feel so naturally comfortable, you may even forget they aren’t your own teeth!

Because implant-retained dentures are attached to implant posts, they:

  • Never require adhesives
  • Stay in place all day or night
  • Never slip or pinch
  • Allow you to eat normally
  • Do not cover the roof your mouth or irritate your gums
  • Preserve your bone and facial structure against shrinkage
  • Let you speak and smile with total confidence

If you are missing teeth, need to have a full arch of teeth removed, or are tired of your uncomfortable dentures, please talk to the highly-trained doctors at Mooring Dental. We can replace those dentures – and renew your smile!

All-on-4

If you are missing all or most of your teeth and have been told that you have had too much bone deterioration to secure an implant post, or if your bone mass is delicate but you still long for the freedom and confidence of implant-retained dentures, talk to your team at Mooring Dental about All-on-Four implant-retained dentures.

The All-on-4 technique is so precise and innovative, that almost anyone can wear implant-retained-dentures without the need for bone grafts, sinus lifts, or prolonged healing times. Because each titanium post is placed at a precision angle, utilizing plans created with the help of our cone beam, 3d scanner, these posts can be effectively placed, even in areas of bone loss or deterioration. Plus, instead of needing to wait months and months while the posts heal before you can receive your permanent dentures, All-on-4 allows us to place your posts and your beautiful new teeth in one visit!

Bone Grafting

When we discover that we need to extract a tooth or teeth, we almost always suggest bone grafting for site preservation. It’s like insurance for your future appearance!

You see, without your tooth roots to keep bone stimulated, your bone almost immediately begins to shrink, or “resorb.” Most bone resorption occurs in the first few months after oral surgery, but your bone will continue to degenerate, year after year, unless a new tooth root – an implant– is surgically fixed into the bone. Site preservation with bone grafting can reduce that loss and keep your bone in better shape longer. This is especially important if you ever want the option of replacing teeth with dental implants.

We usually refer to site preservations as socket grafts because, as soon as a tooth is removed and the socket becomes exposed, we place grafting material directly into the socket to support it and and prevent reduction in gum and bone volume, dramatically improving your ability to qualify for future dental implants and reducing the need for more extensive bone augmentation surgeries.

If you need to have a tooth removed, please ask us how bone grafting for site preservation could save your smile now – and in the future.

Technology

When it’s time to place dental implants, Mooring Dental’s leading-edge technology really comes into play to help make implant post placement faster, more accurate, and more secure as well as saving you valuable time.

It starts with our cone beam technology. Our cone beam/ CT tomography machine is an amazing diagnostic tool that lets us assess your anatomy, evaluate your bone density, and determine where to place your implants for ideal integration – all in 3D!

Once your implants posts are placed, our CEREC CAD/CAM technology takes center stage. Because we can design and mill your replacement teeth right here in our office, you never have to wait for your implant crowns or bridges. Plus, because we mill them ourselves, if any adjustments or corrections need to be made, we can make them at your placement appointment – no need to send anything back to the lab!
